The penchant for open plan living has increased markedly over the course of the last decade, with both new builds and renovations dedicated to this style. Once Covid-19 struck, and many were forced into lockdown and working from home, the need for more separation in homes increased.
It’s not easy to implement separation in homes that have been designed for open plan living, however this is where the concept of ‘zoning’ can be put into practice to accomplish effective sectioning – from designated office space, to dining, and so on.
An easy way to accomplish effective zoning is through the use of colour, which can be on walls, communicated through furniture or flooring. For the purposes of this knowledge piece, however, we will be looking at how textured tiles can be utilised to create a first-class zoning effect.
Texture creates interest and depth in spaces. It’s a subtle approach that creates a point of difference through the senses of sight, and also touch. Using textured tiles on walls creates a different vibe between spaces, while also maintaining harmony and balance.
Here are some of our favourite options for creating zones through textured tiles.
ARDEN DARK
Wood effect tiles, such as our prime Arden Dark, can be installed on the floor to bring zoning into play. Wood grain, while providing the textural quality we’re looking for, also offers up a degree of neutrality to allow for the use of colour flashes – in terms of furniture and accessories to further help with the zoning concept.
POROS AQUA B
Offering up a more opulent option, Poros Aqua B is a marble effect tile that oozes sophistication. Its almost 3D quality graining provides a unique feel, and the polished finish in large format allows for this to be used on flooring in a living or dining space to provide a different kind of texture. It is also suitable for use in features within spaces, such as a kitchen bar or kitchen island. A beautiful tile with a number of applications.
CRAQUELE COLLECTION
Pure and traditional in style, the Craquele collection is evocative of mid-Century tiles which were manufactured from lead enamels. Over time, these tiles would age and wear, and develop a cracked appearance. With Craquele we are reproducing this effect, using modern manufacturing techniques and a uniquely designed aesthetic.
These tiles provide a modern rustic effect in living spaces, with the texture of a classic crackle tile to help achieve a wonderful finish. Craquele can be utilsied to zone a mini study area of a living or dining room by applying onto a feature wall or an alcove.
